Income Tax on ₹12 Lakh Salary — What You Actually Pay

₹12 lakh is the most consequential salary in the Indian tax code — you pay nothing, and you are one raise away from a band where earning more means taking home less.

Corrected 29 August 2026. An earlier version of this page excluded target variable pay from both received cash and taxable salary, which understated income tax. Figures are recalculated under model PS-A3. What changed →

Short answer: on a ₹12 Lakh gross salary you pay zero income tax under the new regime. The ₹75,000 standard deduction brings taxable income to ₹11.25 L, inside the ₹12 lakh Section 156(2)(a) rebate — so the whole liability is wiped out.

The dead zone between ₹12.76 lakh and ₹13.48 lakh

Taxable income is ₹11.25 L, so your tax is zero. The rebate covers everything.

But the rebate is a cliff, not a slope. The moment taxable income passes ₹12 lakh it vanishes entirely and you owe tax from ₹4 lakh upwards. Marginal relief cushions this, and it is still not enough:

Gross salaryTaxYou take home
₹12,75,000₹0₹12,75,000
₹13,00,000₹26,000₹12,74,000
₹13,25,000₹52,000₹12,73,000
₹13,50,000₹74,100₹12,75,900

Earn ₹50,000 more and take home ₹2,000 less. Anywhere between roughly ₹12,76,000 and ₹13,48,000 gross you are worse off than at ₹12,75,000.

Three ways to negotiate around it

If an offer or an appraisal lands you inside that band, these are worth raising with HR:

Push the increment past ₹13.5 lakh. Above that you are genuinely ahead again. A smaller raise that clears the band beats a larger one that lands in it.

Take the excess as employer NPS under 80CCD(2). This is one of the very few deductions that survives into the new regime — up to 14% of basic salary, deductible, and it keeps your taxable income below the cliff.

Or as higher employer PF. Same principle, and it compounds at 8.25% tax-free.

Most people accept the raise, watch gross go up and bank credit go down, and never work out why.

Frequently asked questions

How much income tax do I pay on a ₹12 Lakh salary?

On a gross salary of ₹12 Lakh, income tax under the new regime for Tax Year 2026-27 and FY 2026-27 is zero, because taxable income after the ₹75,000 standard deduction is ₹11.25 L, within the Section 156(2)(a) rebate limit.

Should I choose the old or new regime on ₹12 Lakh?

The new regime, without question. Your tax is already zero, and no combination of deductions can beat zero.

What is the take-home on a ₹12 Lakh salary?

After income tax of ₹0, roughly ₹12.00 L of your gross salary remains. Note this is gross salary, not CTC — employer PF, the gratuity provision and A target variable component may be paid separately. Any amount actually paid is salary cash and is taxable in that year., and employee PF and professional tax are deducted separately.

Does the standard deduction apply under the new regime?

Yes. The ₹75,000 standard deduction is available under the new regime for salaried taxpayers and pensioners, and is applied automatically by your employer. You do not claim it.
