Income Tax on ₹1 Crore Salary — What You Actually Pay

At ₹1 crore, the applicable surcharge is 10% and roughly three in every ten rupees of your package goes to tax.

Corrected 29 August 2026. An earlier version of this page excluded target variable pay from both received cash and taxable salary, which understated income tax. Figures are recalculated under model PS-A3. What changed →

Short answer: on a ₹1 Crore gross salary you pay ₹29.26 L in income tax under the new regime for Tax Year 2026-27 and FY 2026-27 — an effective 29.3% of gross, or about ₹2.44 L deducted as TDS each month.

Where a crore actually lands

New regime tax is ₹29.26 L — an effective 29.3% of gross, including the 10% surcharge, because taxable income of ₹99,25,000 does not exceed ₹1 crore. Take-home is about ₹70.74 L.

The surcharge is levied on the tax, not the income, which is why the effective rate climbs so sharply across this threshold. Marginal relief applies at the boundary and stops the immediate crossing from being punitive, but the underlying rate is now materially higher than at ₹50 lakh.

A ₹1 lakh raise from here nets you about ₹48,260.

What matters at this income, and what does not

Deductions are irrelevant — the entire 80C basket is a rounding error against this tax bill, and the old regime is unreachable by any combination of them.

What does matter is structural, and largely outside what a website can advise on: how compensation is split between salary, ESOPs and deferred components; the timing of stock option exercise, which is taxed as perquisite at exercise and again as capital gains at sale; and whether income can legitimately sit in a different entity.

We will say this plainly because we have nothing to sell you: at this income, a fee-only chartered accountant is worth several times what they cost, and the difference between a fee-only adviser and a commission-earning distributor matters more here than anywhere else on this site.
