Monthly income, yearly interest and maturity value for every fixed deposit amount.
Short answer: at 7.25%, every ₹1 lakh of fixed deposit pays about ₹604 a month before tax. At the 30% slab that falls to roughly ₹423 — an effective 5.08% return, which is close to zero once inflation is counted.

Monthly figures assume the non-cumulative payout option. Maturity assumes cumulative with quarterly compounding.
The post-tax column is the one that matters if you are in the 30% bracket. A 7.25% FD becomes a 5.08% investment after tax — and with inflation around 5–6%, your real return is roughly zero. Your capital is safe in rupee terms and losing purchasing power in real terms.
That does not make FDs useless. It makes them right for short horizons, emergency funds, and low tax brackets — and wrong for long-term wealth building at a high slab.
Cumulative FDs compound quarterly in India: maturity equals principal times (1 + rate/400) raised to the power of four times the number of years. Non-cumulative FDs pay simple interest monthly or quarterly without compounding.
No. FD interest is added to your income and taxed at your slab rate. Banks deduct 10% TDS once annual interest crosses ₹40,000 (₹50,000 for senior citizens), but your final liability depends on your slab.
